Weekly pick-and-mix

January is often a mixed month for hobby progress. For me at least. Short days, back to work, sudden cold snap. Sounds like excuses. A little, probably. But more it means I'm treading water until energy levels recharge. So I have been building more than painting past couple of weeks. There's a backlog of Warhammer character kits that have been sat on the shelf for an age, so I am assembling them as project fillers, palette cleansers and just out and out chill painting projects when I fancy a break from army painting. They really are gorgeous kits, so it was nice just grabbing one off the shelf occasional evenings, cleaning them up and putting them together.  I'm particularly impressed by this years Warhammer+ kits which are stunning designs. Both the Inquisitor and retinue and the Witch Hunter with companion. I have literally no idea how I plan to use any of them in games. Probably won't, but the Inquisitor and the Cadian (Kasrkin?) I see potential for a gang retinue, ...

News from the Underhive

Image
A new house enter the Underhive this week, Delaque. Or at least my take on the most secretive of Necromunda houses. Welcome, new prospects Before diving into that, let's discuss my expanding Goliath gang, the 'Rust Plate Pact.' They have grown significantly since I first started them. The gang's ranks have swelled with new Juves and Forgeborn. Mad Jack now wields a matching pair of twinned pulverisers, which he seems quite fond of based on recent games. Hotshot has also joined the party, bringing his rivet cannon and a penchant for setting anything remotely flammable ablaze, and even a few things that probably shouldn't be. Recruits have been sourced from both new and old miniatures, with the latter appearing quite small compared to the current range. I was thrilled to stumble upon some of the older Goliath models in a bits box. The gang has even garnered the patronage of one of the hive guilds, as well as an Ambot, which was acquired with hard-earned coin. I am cur...

Necromunda Escher starting gang

Image
After learning the ropes I figured a Necromunda Escher starting gang was in order. As the starter set helpfully provided an Escher gang in addition to the Goliaths, that was ideal. When I tackled the Goliath 'Rust Plate Pact,' I fully embraced Games Workshop's Contrast paint range, applying it over a greyscale pre-shade. That was the main reason I was able to prepare my starting gang for the inaugural fight night and quickly incorporate new forces as the campaign unfolded. As the campaign progressed, I dynamically added gang members, hangers-on, brutes, and hired guns based on necessity or opportunity, making it impossible to plan ahead for specific additions. Adopting a rapid painting approach was crucial in breathing life into the gang, and the vibrant pigments found in Contrast paints played a pivotal role in this endeavor. For that reason alone, I adhered to the same method when working on the Escher starting gang, carefully selecting two key colors as the foundation. T...

Necromunda Goliath starting gang

Image
The 'Iron Plate Pact' are a Necromunda Goliath starting gang and the first gang I've assembled and painted since the games re-launch. Which is a bit strange now I think about it as I have always been an avid fan of Necromunda's diverse and eclectic melting pot background for all things Warhammer. As I write this it has only been a couple of days since Games Workshop announced the return of the Squats (note: not League) as a new gang set. So why now? Simply because the local club is about to kick off the second season of their ongoing Necromunda campaign and although I missed season one, I am determined to get some skirmish gaming in this year. The Necromunda Goliath plastics have been sat un-used since I got them, so seems fitting they should be my first starter gang. If nothing else they are 'theoretically' resilient and forgiving to mistakes while I learn the ropes all over again. By way of apology I am making sure they have their full colours before the first...
