Weekly pick-and-mix
January is often a mixed month for hobby progress. For me at least. Short days, back to work, sudden cold snap. Sounds like excuses. A little, probably. But more it means I'm treading water until energy levels recharge. So I have been building more than painting past couple of weeks.
There's a backlog of Warhammer character kits that have been sat on the shelf for an age, so I am assembling them as project fillers, palette cleansers and just out and out chill painting projects when I fancy a break from army painting. They really are gorgeous kits, so it was nice just grabbing one off the shelf occasional evenings, cleaning them up and putting them together.
I'm particularly impressed by this years Warhammer+ kits which are stunning designs. Both the Inquisitor and retinue and the Witch Hunter with companion. I have literally no idea how I plan to use any of them in games. Probably won't, but the Inquisitor and the Cadian (Kasrkin?) I see potential for a gang retinue, killteam, or just something different to use in Necromunda maybe. If I recall, there's a Valkyrie kit somewhere in storage that would be a nice centrepiece for them. Lot's of narrative potential there either way.
On the topic of Necromunda, I've just caught the reveals from LVO and the Wasteland ones are the ones I'm most interested in. Love the new terrain kits. Technically, the Zone Mortalis ruins are a re-package, but liking that defence post. The Nomad expansion and book is a guaranteed purchase for me. I'm itching to make a start on that gang and their delightful cornucopia of critters! There were some other interesting reveals for the other games, but nothing I'd likely to be looking to build or paint. My Mechanicum come in small scale now and even though I really love the look and design of the Gravelord kits, it will likely be many a year before I dive into fantasy again. Just too many Heresy and Legions projects ahead.
Nothing revealed for Legions Imperialis for 2025 yet. That's fine by me as it's giving me a chance to catch up on the recent Mechanicum and late 2024 Solar Auxilia and Astartes detachments. It's also meant I could press on with Metalica Reaver two pre-shading. That's done now, but before I do the colour application and metals, as I said at the start I'm going to recharge my batteries first, rather than rush the painting when I'm just not feeling it and regret the result later.
I mean, it's not like I don't have an astronomical amount of terrain backlog I could also be working on right now. Much less demanding and relaxing. I can think of two ZM tiles in particular I could start getting some colour on. Maybe that what I need right now. Some down to terra rusty terrain painting!
Well, I feel that's this weekend sorted out then.
